Once you’ve identified your representatives, take a moment to learn who they are. These are your elected officials; you are their constituent, which means they are there to represent you.

Connecting with your legislators doesn’t require a trip to the State House. Many representatives hold local office hours or town meetings right in your community. A simple call to your town hall can tell you when your representative will be available locally. Sitting down for a conversation, introducing yourself, and sharing who you are and what matters to you can be incredibly impactful.

Building these relationships matters. When representatives recognize your face and know your name, they know who to reach out to when issues arise. Advocacy isn’t about confrontation, it’s about connection.

Testifying at a public hearing can be intimidating, especially the first time. Nerves are real. Words get jumbled. Fear of being judged can take over, even when you care deeply about what you’re saying.

I know this firsthand. I’ve stood in those rooms feeling nervous, stumbling over my words, and wishing I had done things differently. Showing up wasn’t easy, but it mattered. And with experience comes clarity, confidence, and perspective.

If you’re preparing to testify at a public hearing and feeling unsure, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I can help you understand the process, talk through what to expect, and prepare in a way that feels authentic to you, not perfect, just prepared.

Writing a letter or email to your elected officials can be just as impactful as speaking at a public hearing, and it doesn’t require you to be an expert.

Writing a letter or email to your elected officials can be just as impactful as speaking at a public hearing, and it doesn’t require you to be an expert.

The most effective written testimony is clear, personal, and to the point. Short letters, often no more than one or two paragraphs, are more likely to be read and understood. In many cases, a legislative aide will review messages first, so clarity matters far more than technical language or lengthy explanations.

If you’re unsure how to get started, what to say, or how to organize your thoughts, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I’m happy to help you walk through the process, review your message, or talk through your ideas so your voice is heard clearly and confidently.

If this is new to you or if writing feels intimidating, reach out. Support, guidance, and encouragement can make all the difference.
